The story
Produced in the kilns of Jingdezhen for European buyers who had never been to China and never would. The continuous riverscape — willows, fishing boats, a pagoda on a distant hill — was designed by painters who had also never seen such a scene, working from descriptions of descriptions. It is a beautiful fiction, made with extraordinary skill.
