The story
Isfahan prayer rugs occupy a particular place in the tradition: personal objects, made for a single body in a single act of devotion, and yet worked to a standard of craftsmanship that exceeds what any prayer would require. The mihrab arch of this example frames a garden of Safavid blossoms — roses, irises, hyacinths — rendered with a fineness that suggests the weaver was in no hurry and had no doubt about the quality of the work.
