The story
In the sixteenth century, the kilns of Iznik produced the finest ceramics in the world. The cobalt, turquoise, and coral-red palette; the flowing vines and tulips; the extraordinary whiteness of the fritware body — all of it was in service of the Ottoman court and its mosques. This panel of four tiles has been framed at some point in its history, which has preserved its condition almost perfectly. The red is still red. That almost never happens.
