The story
A koro is an incense burner — an object whose purpose is to disappear. The smoke rose and the room changed and the vessel remained, unchanged and perfect. This Meiji example stands on three legs cast in the form of stylized mythical beasts. The lid is pierced with a chrysanthemum pattern and surmounted by a standing shishi. It was made for a wealthy household and has the patina of a century of careful handling.
