The story

The Damascus workshops of the nineteenth century produced inlaid woodwork of extraordinary quality — mother-of-pearl, ebony, and ivory set into walnut in geometric and arabesque patterns that owe everything to the great tradition of Islamic ornament. This backgammon board folds flat and opens to reveal a playing field as elaborately decorated as the outside. It was meant to be seen as much as played. Both are still possible.
