The story
Thangka painting is one of the most demanding visual traditions in the world. The proportions of the deity's body, the arrangement of the hand gestures, the hierarchy of surrounding figures — all are governed by texts that have not changed in a thousand years. Within those constraints, the painter of this piece has achieved something remarkable: a Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, that looks genuinely compassionate. The gold background is original. The brocade mounting is later but sympathetic.
